Are you an author or planning to be one? Where do you find your writing ideas?
I’ll just bet you work hard at it and don’t expect ideas to fall into your lap
from the sky.
Let’s say I have an idea for my next
romantic suspense book. Actually, I
started one and began with the heroine, a director of a preschool, who supports
all parents including same sex parents. Her preschool is under attack by a hate
group yet to be defined. The hero is the
sheriff who investigates the bomb. This is my concept. I need characters,
settings, plots, subplots, and themes. I
give my characters horoscopes and keep their characteristics solid while
developing the story outline.
There’s
no shortage of sources we can turn to for inspiration. Why not start with
someone you know from real life. Do they
have a standout personality and have strengths when facing problems?
Read about political and social injustices.
What about poverty and oppression?
Thanks to the Internet, political and
social issues are well documented easily accessible. If you can find an issue
that matters to you, just look to the news and documentaries for true stories
that you can use for inspiration. The world is full of strange, wondrous, and
horrific people and events. Draw unexpected connections between them to form
the basis of a captivating story idea. In other words, let your imagination
flow as you plot your story.
