#BookQW read an excerpt with today's word, break, from Deadly Alliance #RomanticSuspense from #Tirgearr Publishing.

BookQW word is break, and here is an excerpt from Deadly Alliance, a steamy romantic suspense.

Finn Donahue’s break at Burlie’s Jazz Club was about to end. Familiar lyrics from the sultry tune floated through his mind long after the saxophonist stopped playing. Hold on like leaves and fall to what is left. Like the song, Autumn Leaves, he spiraled downward, failed to identify the chicken shit stealing his company’s cash. For three damn years, ten percent of the monthly deposits were sucked into a mysterious thief’s cash cow.

The crowd wandered out. Time for him to return to gloom and doom. He pressed a hand over his throbbing forehead with enough force to leave marks.  Had the thief hired a colleague? The colleague was not a car-stealing, knee-smashing, fire-setting knucklehead.  His mouth went dry at the fuck’s covert method and zest for cheating him. He’d question his snake of a partner, Les Kelly, if he weren’t already dead.

Across the room, a female patron gathered her belongings. As her ankle boots tapped toward him, a pair of shapely legs came into view.

His head snapped up.  Amy Kintyre, the late Les’s girlfriend, in the running for his bookkeeping job, spotted him.

“Finn.” She swerved his way. “What a coincidence!” This chick lacked a pick-me-up line.

“Hello, Amy.” He didn’t offer her a seat.

She tilted her head to one side, studying the expression on his face. “Are we still on for nine?” She spoke with an annoying squeak.

“We are.” He watched her lips form a tight smile as she fumbled with her little purse. Turning away, she headed for the pink-windowed door to the ladies’ room.

His stomach did a quick, discomforting twist at the thought of working with Les’s former girlfriend. As time went on, karma between the partners slipped. Les held back. Enigmatic people had motive to protect inconsistencies. He assumed Amy hid a few. He sighed and gazed blankly around the club.

Pendant lights offered a fuzzy softness except for the bar. Behind it, opaque glass shelves were lit with violet light. The warm personality of the owner gave the establishment a comfortable feel. Burlie was closing up. With more oil to burn at his office, he stood to cross the mosaic tile dance floor.

The front door opened. “Sorry, we’re closed.” Holding a broom, Burlie swept behind the bar.

Finn stepped closer. Drunken merrymakers, they were not. His heart hammered like it was stuck in overdrive.

“We offer protection.” Speaking with a Spanish accent, the shortest of the trio dressed like the others, and donned the ISIS-style  black ski mask.

“I have protection.” Burlie’s big mouth nailed his coffin.

A second thug grabbed the bartender’s hand and pulled out clippers. “You’ll change your mind, one finger at a time.”

“I just paid the Irish.” Panic burrowed into Burlie’s high-pitched cry. He thrashed his arms as he tried to pull his hand back.

“Us you pay.”  His utterance with the object in the first position identified him as an Arab speaker.  Light glinted off shiny metal.  The thug pulled a combat knife, grabbed Burlie’s arms, spun him, put the blade to his neck. Finn dialed 911 and then shouted, “Finn Donahue here. Gang trouble. Burlie’s Jazz Club.”  To grab their attention even more, he heaved in a breath and released a long whistle. His distraction worked.

Burlie broke from the hold, and Finn thanked God for the curious.

“Where are you?” Heavy boots pounded toward him.

Finn’s phone vibrated, but he killed the call and darted into the first door he saw, the one with the frosted pink window. He spotted Amy at the sink and pointed his index finger up.

He took off his coat and wrapped it around his fist. After rapping on the glass, he wound up and threw a hard punch through the window. Glass splintered as he connected with the thug’s nose. Prepared to jump aside, he opened the door.

Amy followed and jumped over the guy spread on the floor, holding a hand over his bleeding nose.

He struggled to stand. Finn patted him down, took his gun, and pointed it at him. After the guy stood, Finn walked him to a chair. “Don’t move.”

“I’ll phone the police.” A high-pitched squeal came from the back of her throat. “Never mind. Police are here.”

From the street, the blue light of a cop car radiated across the club’s interior like a strobe. Uniforms burst through the door.

The first officer made radio contact with homicide, and the second, much younger, rushed to the nearest thug and pulled out flex-cuffs.

“Stand over there, Amy.” Finn motioned toward a corner.

She rolled her eyes and dashed toward Burlie who wrestled with the Arab and tried to keep him from moving toward the young rookie. Amy pulled an item from her purse. A Swiss army knife? Out came a miniature cork screw.

The rookie cop turned the Arab around to be handcuffed and leaned him against a wall. The thug used the hard surface as leverage to throw himself against him.

Finn saw it coming. A switchblade sprung from the Arab’s sleeve. In a split second, he drove it into the cop’s shoulder, but Amy stabbed him in the back with the wine opener.

The Arab spun and pulled a knife from his jeans’ pocket. Amy dodged, but he thrust it into a cop’s gut before running.

Finn waited for an opening and shot him in the hip.

Howling about uncivilized barbarians, he dropped.

Up from his chair, the loser with the broken nose swung his fists, raining blows and a kick to the nuts which Finn deflected.

“Don’t make me shoot you.” Finn stunned him with a chop to the neck, caught him in a headlock. With a gun at his back, he marched him forward.

Amy broke into the center of the room and turned around, taking in the menacing scene. The girl-next-door had street smarts, competency with the corkscrew, and fearless determination.

He walked over and touched her weapon-holding hand. “You didn’t have pocket-knife experience on your resume.” It didn’t make her invincible. Nor did it mean he should hire her.

She shook her head. “Never used it this way. It’s handy when hiking She looked at her pocket knife, folded and stuffed it in her pocket.  Her eyes blinked in frenzy in spite of her bravery.

Fifteen minutes later, with the injured cops heading to Bear Valley Hospital and three unfriendlies loaded into the sheriff’s prisoner-transport vehicle, Burlie signed a complaint and then gushed over Finn and Amy. “You’re good people.” After saying it several times, he asked Finn to serve as his third-party witness and then turned to Amy. “My Lord, Amy. You came to my side. Thank you.”

When Burlie handed her a gift card, she accepted it with a smile. “I saw a lot. If you need a second witness, I can run through all of it.”

“If you’re willing, yes.” His voice was tight.

She offered him a reassuring smile. “Of course, Burlie. The idea of mobsters coming in and offering protection? This makes me mad.”

#amwriting #contest #Romance Orange Rose contest for emerging writers closes at the end of April. Dream big for your manuscript. The best is yet to come for your career.

Dear Romance Author,
The 2018 Orange Rose Contest is an amazing annual event that does two things for the emerging author. You do not need to be a member of RWA to enter the contest.  Let me tell you about the first and second judging rounds.

In the first round which begins at the end of April, every entry receives three critiques from published authors who give specific feedback. Purposeful ideas are the ones that catapult your book to the top so that readers are engaged.  Authors learn so much from each other.  In July entrants receive feedback.  Some who are finalists receive certificates and move to the second round.
In the second round, finalists' manuscripts are sent to top agents and editors in the romance publishing industry, and they also send two or three critiques for your entry.  Because they read the entries, they often request the full manuscript.  Many finalists find the agent or editor at a publishing house.
Please visit The Orange County Chapter of Romance Writers of America and take a look at the flexible new rules for entering the Orange Rose-- tab over to the guidelines.  You do not need to be a member of RWA to enter the contest.
Warm regards,
Kathleen Rowland, Chair

#eggcerptexchange #historical #slavery ONEY, MY ESCAPE FROM SLAVERY -- Martha Washington's favorite servant, Oney Judge @DianaLRubino @PiperHuguley

Please welcome co-authors Diana Rubino and Piper Huguley and their historical novel, Oney, my escape from slavery.

ONEY, MY ESCAPE FROM SLAVERY

by Diana Rubino and Piper Huguley

Oney’s Story…

Teenaged Oney Judge was Martha Washington’s ‘favorite servant.’ Oney and Martha both longed for freedom, but in very different ways. Martha hated being confined to the president’s house, forced to entertain politicians and foreign diplomats. Oney hated being someone else’s property, forced to do labor and wait on her owners day and night.

After President Washington served one term as president, he wrote his farewell speech. He and Martha started packing for their retirement at Mount Vernon, but it was not meant to be. He was elected again—unanimously. He did not want to serve another term, but gave in under pressure.

Martha had no say in it whatsoever. But as she hosted her tea parties and levees, she became close friends with several forward-thinking women, such as Abigail Adams and Judith Murray, feminists of the time. Their radical ideas rubbed off on Martha—education and job training for women to be self-supporting instead of depending on husbands. By the end of George’s term, she experienced a steep character arc. She even changed her attitude toward slavery. When Oney escaped at age 20, at the end of George’s final term, Martha was very resentful: “She was more like a child to me than a servant.” The Washingtons knew that she’d escaped to Portsmouth, New Hampshire and made several attempts to recapture her. But in a sudden act of lenience, Martha gave up on Oney and let her remain free. During her husband’s presidency, Martha complained, “I am more like a state prisoner”, so perhaps she put herself in Oney’s place and realized she deserved liberty, too.

As our first First Lady, Martha Washington evolved from a  grandmotherly wife and homebody to an outspoken champion of women’s rights. She provided freedom for her slaves at her death.

While living in Portsmouth, Oney married a sailor, Jack Staines, and had three children. She outlived her husband and children, and lived her remaining free life in Greenland, New Hampshire. Somewhat of a local celebrity, she lived in poverty, but the locals supported her and she took in sewing to supplement her meager income. She declared in an 1847 interview, “I am free now and choose to remain so.”

An Excerpt from ONEY, MY ESCAPE FROM SLAVERY

The hour finally came—while they ate dinner.

Nothing heavied my heart—not remorse, not guilt, not sadness upon fleeing my master and mistress. Raw thirst for freedom overcame all that. I walked straight past the Washingtons and out that door. When I shut it, I left them—and my forced bondage— behind me.

I tore through the muddy streets in pouring rain. Gasping for breath, soaked to the skin, my heart slamming in terror, I glanced behind me, again and again. No one pursued me—yet. I dreaded and expected pounding footsteps, a clap on my shoulder. But, I asked myself, who would chase me through the driving rain? No, it is not possible, I affirmed—they didn’t even know I’d left the kitchen.

At the Jones house I slowed and caught my breath. When Absalom opened the door, I staggered inside, laughing, sobbing, gulping for dear life.

I spent the night pacing the attic room, hands clasped. “I beg of you, dear God, walk beside me on this journey. See me through this safe. Don’t let them capture me. I only want to be your servant, no one else’s.”

As daybreak nudged away the darkness, I fell to my knees, weary with fatigue. “Thank you, dear God, for ending my final night of bondage.”

Serendipity at Work

In May 2014, popular romance author Brenda Novak had her annual auction for diabetes—authors donate books, critiques, etc., and people bid on them, similar to Ebay. I donated one of my other books, and I also donated a free manuscript critique. An author named Piper Huguley won the critique auction, but the auction ended and I never heard from her. I thought oh, well, she doesn't want it after all. About 3 months later, she wrote me and sent me her story, A CHAMPION’S HEART, to critique. It's a romance about an African American girl, set in rural Georgia in the 1910s. Very moving and powerful story. I loved it. It was published in 2016 by Liliaceae Publishers.

I'd been wanting to find an African American author to go over my Oney novel, but never looked for anyone. I thought of asking one of my grade school classmates, but just didn't get to it...well, one day I decided to ask Piper.

Right after I asked her, she wrote back and said she'd be happy to help. Then I went on Facebook and saw that Piper just posted that her mother passed away that morning. So I sent her a message of condolence. Then she wrote this back to me:

And I appreciate your kind comments about my mother. You see, I see your request as "heaven sent" for I think I told you about how my mother told me about Oney. I know that she would want me to work on anything, do anything to forward that story. So, even in the midst of a difficult time, I look forward to helping you--something I really didn't expect after you had helped me so much. Thank you for that.

I don't remember her telling me that her mother told her about Oney. I've heard so many stories about people who pass away, and send 'signs' etc. to their loved ones, this was just too strange to be coincidence. Piper helped me a great deal with Oney’s story and became my co-author. We dedicated the book to her mother.

#BookQW word is EAT! #Tirgearr #eroticromance -- One Night in Havana. "You need to eat with all the mojitos you've downed."

Book Quote Wednesday's word is eat, and here is an excerpt from One Night in Havana:

“You need to eat with all the mojitos you’ve downed.” The big tease, Dr. Carlos Montoya, wasn’t  counting. This was her first drink, but his rumbling, sexy timbre hinted at all kinds of dark, hot promises. She’d rubbed shoulders with the Cuban scientist all week. This splendid specimen of Latin male brought on a physical ache that punched low.

A flare-up stirred fear. For her own good, she needed to resist. “I ordered camarones enchiladas.” By now she knew the menu on the chalkboard by heart. She tipped her head back to whiff grilled shrimp soon to arrive in sofrito sauce with fried sweet plantains.

“The flan is good. Just like my abuela makes.”

“I bet. Your grandmother would be happy to hear that,” she said, knowing he brought out the best in most people. Two days ago he'd invited her and a handful of others scuba diving. The chance to ogle him had been one of the perks. He’d worn nothing but swim trunks, his bare chest on display. Every glistening muscle was finely etched. Not a drop of fat on him. Since he’d not given her the time of day, she’d checked him out without him noticing.

The hard-bodied host had led the way toward habitats of soft-bodied creatures. To find where invertebrates lived was never an easy task. Octopuses squeezed into narrow passages of coral for protection and gave females a place to keep their eggs. She’d discovered the remains of a few meals nearby. Octopuses scattered rocks and shells to help them hide.
This grant meant so much to her and no doubt to him as well.

[ Excerpt ]

Jade caught a scent of a human as she entered the fourteen-story building in downtown Snowfall.  It wasn’t any human scent, but something that made all of her instincts flare.  She knew that she’d never caught this particular scent before, but something told her that this human might be important to her.  She tried to brush it off as quickly as the thought came, but she couldn’t find it coincidental she smelled it in the same steel building owned by Ghost and house the headquarters of Dark Company.

As she dismissed the fleeting thought of searching for the scent, her heart thumped once, hard, in her chest at the thought of not finding its owner.  She forced herself to walk toward the elevator bank, ignoring the unwanted perusals she received from the men in the lobby.  Even in an unassuming hoodie and black yoga pants, she drew unwanted attention.  A side-effect of being an immortal.

The elevator opened as soon as she pressed the up-button and she kept her gaze down as she walked into the elevator.  She entered the code to get to Ghost’s private floor, her movements too quick to be caught by the human eye, before she squeezed into the corner.  Jade used her other senses as three men in suits and two women entered the enclosed space with her.  There was no need to glance at the glass interior that covered the back wall to see what she looked like.

She sensed eyes on her.  Instead of searching out the gaze, she whipped her long, straight dyed black hair into a bun on the back of her head with quick movements before sneaking her hands into the front pockets of her hoodie.

Jade waited patiently as the car traveled toward the penthouse, her ultimate destination, but she couldn’t help but try and find the intriguing scent from earlier.

After my meeting.

All she knew was he hadn’t used the particular elevator she was in and higher the lift took her in the building, the more his scent dissipated.

In her entire existence, or what she remembered of it, she’d never been attracted to…anyone.  She’d never felt the pull to find someone either.  But lately, she’d felt increasingly restless whenever she had any downtime and her skin tingled in a way that had nothing to do with signaling immediate danger.  It was as though her body tried to convey something she didn’t understand.

Her thoughts were interrupted when a man who had gotten into the elevator with her on the first floor stepped into her personal space.

“Hey, beautiful?”

Jade rolled her eyes and raised her head to glare at the man.  Of course, he wouldn’t take the hint that she wanted to be left alone.  To emphasize the point, she crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, moving away from his intrusion.

The man decided to take this as an invitation and moved to wrap his arm around her waist.  The move gave her a clear shot to his ribs and she took it, gently moving her elbow back and making contact.  She flinched when she heard a distinctive crack, realizing she hadn’t been careful enough.  Before she could apologize, the elevator door opened and he ran off without looking back, holding onto his side.

She sighed.

#RomanceBooks #boxset hot #romance, Excerpt: Stealing the Billionaire’s Heart (from The Billionaire's Club: A Limited Edition Collection of Billionaire Romances) @robinsromances

Please welcome talented author, Robin Michaela, who is here to tell us about the Billionaire’s Club Boxed set. Take it away, Robin.

I'm Robin Michaela and I’m thrilled to be one of the 12 authors in The Billionaire's Club multi-author boxed set! The Billionaire’s Club is all about high stakes, risk takers, and power-wielding billionaires. This set will take you on a ride of romance, seduction, and games of wealth and fortune. Find out what happens when these powerful men meet their match.

Part of my book, Stealing the Billionaire’s Heart, takes place in Venice. In one scene, Lyra and Nicolas take a dreamy gondola ride to a romantic restaurant overlooking a tiny canal. While they’re dining, their gondola gets caught up in a traffic jam of sorts, plugging the canal entrance and forcing them to walk back to Nick’s palazzo.

When my husband and I visited Venice a few years ago, I was fascinated with a small corner of a canal off St. Mark’s Square. It was filled to overflowing with at least a dozen gondolas (and a lot of noise!) as the gondoliers jockeyed for prime positions to snag customers. That memory inspired Lyra and Nick’s romantic evening. I hope you enjoy it!

BLURB:

Lyra Bretton is stunned when she’s abandoned at the altar. Figuring the best way to get over one man is to get under another one, she combs the luxurious Las Vegas resort where she was to be married, intent on spending her almost-wedding night with the sexiest man she can find.

Billionaire womanizer, Nicolas Sebastian, is tempted by the beautiful bride’s shocking proposal. The workaholic COO of the family hotel chain can’t deny his attraction to the woman who should be weeping in her room instead of shredding her wedding gown in his lounge. Their chemistry is explosive, but Nicolas has been burned before. He’ll never commit his heart because he learned years ago that women are only interested in his wallet.

Their Vegas fling soon turns into something neither of them can control. But, when they travel to his lavish property in Italy, money goes missing and expensive jewelry turns up in Lyra’s possession, putting their fragile future in jeopardy. Unless they can find a way to trust again, they risk losing each other forever.

EXCERPT:

As Nicolas stood in the shadows, Lyra shifted and caught sight of him. When she did, she beamed and held out her hand. “Come here, Nick. You’re missing all the fun.”

“What’s up?”

“Well…I’m hoping you will be, lover…and very soon.” She wet her lips and squeezed his hand.  “But I was referring to the Gondola Wars going on down there.” Gesturing toward the canal, she raised her wine glass and saluted the gondoliers on the canal below.

He grinned and slid into his chair, then leaned over to look below. Two boats were cruising the tiny canal, side-by-side. They’d apparently gotten stuck together in the narrows, but that didn’t deter the gondoliers. Each was pushing and prodding the other’s boat in an attempt to get free. Their passengers clung to each other as the gondolas rocked in their wake. While Nicolas watched, their own gondola got caught in the altercation. Their gondolier had untied his boat and drifted away from the other vessels, but ended up being just wide enough to snugly jam all three boats together, blocking the entrance to the canal.

“Looks like we’re walking home,” Nicolas commented.

“I hope not. I have no idea where we are. This city is like a maze.”

“No worries, I know exactly where the palazzo is.” He winked at her. “Stick with me, kid, I’ll get you places.”

Lyra squinted at him. “Isn’t that an old joke? I don’t remember the setup, though.”

“What did the stamp say to the envelope?”

Lyra giggled. “Oh…stick with me…I get it.”

By the time they finished their meal, she was grateful for the chance to walk off some of their food. They were holding hands, strolling the dark cobblestone streets, and stopping about every fifty feet to kiss.

“It’s a good thing I don’t live here,” she told Nicolas. “I’d be on a permanent diet. I adore pasta.”

“The meal was superb,” he agreed, “but you wouldn’t need to diet if you lived in Venice.”

“Why not?”

He stopped as they reached the crest of the small bridge they were crossing, then cupped the back of her head and drew her into a leisurely kiss that had her pulse thrumming. “Because I can think of plenty of ways to work it off. Say, by chasing you around the bedroom every night.”

“What makes you think I’d run?” She backed him against the time-worn limestone railing and leaned into him, grinding her pelvis against his erection. “I want you, Nick.”

“Hell, Lyra, you’re driving me crazy,” he said as his mouth descended over hers.

When they came up for air, his gaze roamed hungrily over her face. “If I didn’t think I’d get arrested, I’d hike up that pretty skirt of yours and take you right here on the bridge.”

“I’m not wearing panties, so if I didn’t think you’d be arrested, I’d probably let you do it.”

#EggcerptExchange! #eroticromance #LGBTQ Vegas Gambler by Adriana Kraft, Meghan’s Playhouse Book 5 @AdrianaKraft

Today I have my spotlight on The Vegas Gambler by Adriana Kraft.  This is
Meghan’s Playhouse Book 5, a new release from Extasy books

ABOUT VEGAS GAMBLER

Too old?

Baby boomers. Is that you? This year, the youngest baby boomers turn 54. Um, and hubs and I aren’t among the youngest. So when we write an erotic romance hero in his 50s, it's just our way of saying Rock On!

In our Meghan’s Playhouse series, we’ve written two heroes over fifty. The series follows our sprite of a heroine, Meg Keenan, for a decade, starting in her early twenties. Her main squeeze in A Woman for Zachary (book 2) is something of a sugar daddy who helps her get her start on Broadway. In turn, she helps him finally recognize the love of his life, her drama coach.

By book 5 (Vegas Gambler) she’s a successful actress, and she’s enjoying the company of another older man. Of course, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but we think none of the four characters who get together in Vegas Gambler is aware of all the games being played…

BLURB

Time off in Vegas with her latest squeeze? Nothing could be better—unless maybe Meg adds another woman, or perhaps another man as well. What happens in Vegas…

Fresh with success from a recent stint in a musical on the Las Vegas Strip, Meghan Keenan takes some time off to play with her current flame, Jack Hawthorne, professional poker player. She’s delighted to add her petite masseuse Tia Minh to the mix and even more thrilled when she learns Tia’s relationship with her boyfriend Tony Sanders is on the skids. It’s the perfect challenge!

Tia has different ideas—she thinks Tony would be perfect for Meg, and she conspires to throw them together any way she can.

Ever the gambler, Jack catches on to Tia’s game quickly and keeps the ruse going behind Meg’s back. Who knew his heart was up for grabs?

EXCERPT

Meg kept her gaze fixed on Jack Hawthorne, who sat across from her at the small round wicker table. He was paying half attention to her and half to the solitaire cards spread out before him. She tried her best to decipher Jack’s response to her announcement that she’d be entertaining Tia on Sunday.

Not for the first time, she wished she hadn’t given up her own condo when she’d agree to extend her Vegas stay eight weeks or so after the show closed to help with the local community theater and to frolic with Jack, whom she’d grown to like and admire a lot. Still, he was a professional poker player and an expert at concealing his emotions. “So it doesn’t bother you,” she pressed on, “that I’ve made plans with my former masseuse?”

Jack looked up from the cards to stare at her. His dark eyes softened. With one hand he swiped at a lock of black hair that often threatened his brow. “Why should it? You’re your own woman. I don’t have a brand on you. I know you’ve been with other women during your time in Vegas. Why should this one matter to me any more than any other?”

“Because I’ve never invited a girl to your place,” Meg huffed. “I do wish I’d kept my apartment.”

“Nonsense. That would’ve been a waste. Besides, I like waking up with you at my side.”

Are you an #Irish American-- do you make #Cornbeef and Cabbage-- that's Irish American, too! #Tirgearr Donahue Series features Irish Americans

According to Census data, there are 39.6 million American who claim Irish heritage including five million who say they are of Scots-Irish heritage. That number is almost seven times larger than the entire population of Ireland (6.3 million). After German, Irish is the most common ancestry of Americans. Now Jed Kulko, chief economist for Trulia, has created a map showing the areas with the most concentrated number of Irish Americans.

“Irish Americans are at least 5 percent of the population in most counties across the U.S., and 10 percent or more in most of New England, New York state, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and other smaller counties across the country," he said.

With 12.9 percent of its residents claiming Irish ancestry, New York has the most concentrated Irish American population. At 20.4 percent, Boston has the most concentrated Irish population for a city, while Miami, at 1 percent, has the least.

According to Kolko's data, the one neighborhood in the entire U.S. that has the largest Irish American population is Breezy Point in Queens, where 54.3 percent of its population claim Irish ancestry.

Kolko says that new Irish immigrants to the U.S. tend to settle in areas that already have a large Irish population. The picture below is courtesy of Trulia.

#EggcerptExchange #Western #Romance The Tempered Series by Pamela Thibodeaux @psthib

Author Pamela Thibodeaux shares Five Facts about the Tempered series set in Bandera, TX

Bandera, Texas is known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World.”

People from all over the world travel to Bandera and stay at dude/guest ranches to experience Texas.

Bandera is Spanish for “banner” or “flag”

St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bandera is the 2nd oldest Polish church in the United States.

Although Pamela visited Bandera as a child with my grandparents, she did not return to that area until 2001 for a book signing. However, since 2010, she lived and worked at the Silver Spur guest ranch in Bandera, Texas for months at a time.
Now that's special, and so is The Tempered Series.

Excerpts:

Tempered Hearts:

For the first time, Craig noticed how tired she looked and felt a tug of remorse. “I’ll tend him for you,” he offered. “Maria will show you to your room.”

She shook her head. “That’s okay, he won’t let you.”

“Nonsense,” he argued, stepping off the porch and heading toward the trailer. “Never met a horse I couldn’t handle.”

Tamera rolled her eyes. “Arrogant jerk,” she muttered under her breath, then blushed when the Senior Craig Harris chuckled. “Wait,” she called, as Craig reached for the door. “Please, just let me get him,” she insisted, grabbing his hand. Craig grinned at her obvious concern, a smug, lazy smile that made her stomach knot with tension.

“You afraid for me, little one?” he inquired in a soft, husky tone.

Tamera looked into his teasing eyes and ground her teeth in frustration. He was as conceited as he was arrogant! “I couldn’t care less if you got your skull kicked in. Probably do you some good,” she bit out, pushing him away from the trailer. “My only concern is that he’ll hurt himself while doing you the favor.”

Tempered Dreams

“I’m Katrina. I’ll be your...” her voice trailed off as she gazed into the sparkling eyes of Dr. Scott Hensley.

Scott grinned, surprised and pleased to have finally run into her. He’d often wondered and prayed that he would. “You’ll be my what?”

His eyes shone with mischief, his voice lowered to a husky tone. Trina flushed. Everything about his presence made her nerves hum. “Waitress,” she managed on a suddenly dry throat.

“How’ve you been?”

She smiled. “Okay, busy. May I get you something?”

“Bourbon and water. Alternate that with a coke. Oh, in case I forget,” he stopped her hasty retreat with a wink. “Two’s my limit.” Katrina laughed. The silky, tinkling sound made Scott think of wind chimes.

“You don’t seem like the type to forget anything,” she remarked.

Know it, Sweetheart, he thought as she walked away, the subtle sway of hips crowding his mind.

Tempered Fire

Craig paused at the barn entrance. “I wonder what he wants,” he muttered. It hadn’t set well with him that the boy didn’t introduce himself the day he brought Amber home from school, nor had he made a point to do so since. And it irritated him royally that Amber walked around singing some long-forgotten Carpenter’s song about a guy with ‘gold dust in his hair and golden starlight in his eyes of blue.’ She used to hate that song, always said it was corny.

He hated it now.

“He probably wants the same thing you wanted at his age,” Tamera teased, seeing his eyes darken and jaw harden.

“That’s not funny, Temper. When I was his age I had a truckload of responsibility on my shoulders. I didn’t have time to court a girl without the thought of meeting her parents.”

“Court?” Tamera laughed, rolling her eyes. “Is that what you call it?” she shook her head. “I swear, sometimes I think you were born in the wrong century.”

Tempered Joy

Ace clapped his hands together and blew on his fingertips for warmth. “One more time,” he implored his father. “One more time then we’ll call it quits.”

Craig nodded. “Okay Ace. That old bull is getting tired, so is this one.”

Ace grinned. “Old my foot, you love it and you know it. Makes you think of your younger days.”

Craig grunted. “My younger days were not spent chasing bulls.”

Ace laughed. “No? Chasing what then?”

“Never you mind,” his father replied with a grin while the ranch hands penned the bull in the chute.

Lori’s Redemption:

Rafe Judson made his way to the arena with a smile on his lips, a song in his heart, and the same old limp in his stride. An ex-bull-rider, he still loved everything about the rodeo…the scents—the hay, the horseflesh, the sweat—the excitement, the crowds. As a minister, he didn’t enjoy the accidents or the deaths. He could do without a lot of the language, too.

Remember where you came from old boy.

The thought brought with it a quick stab of conviction.

I remember, Lord.

Wasn’t so long ago he'd cussed and caroused along with the other cowboys. But all that changed with the accident that ended his career as a champion rodeo rider, but opened a whole new world to him, a world filled with faith and optimism.

Far cry from the cynical, bitter cowboy he once was.
